My Dad & I recently invested in the motion picture “Blue Like Jazz” (one of my top 5 favorite novels) for lots of cool God reasons… one of which being the unorthodoxy of everything they’ve done so far. Our names will even be shown in the credits under “Associate Producers”… and as we were about an hour into our 9 hour home-to-home drive from Charleston to Franklin, we passed THE official truck that the author, Donald Miller, is living in for a 30 day promotional tour… Cool God wink! “Filmed March 19, 2012, It was a Monday afternoon in Nashville and we were headed to the world famous Bluebird Cafe where singer-songwriters from around the globe come to introduce their original songs… it’s sort of a right of passage in Nashville and nearly everyone has played there. I was excited to use the opportunity to introduce my first original song, but when we got there we learned that a camera crew had damaged the ceiling while filming a music video in the famous venue. It was enough to have it closed down for repairs… so rather than whine about it we dashed down to the Lookout at Moore’s Lane in Franklin to take some photos. While we were shooting some pictures Amber pulled out her guitar and all of a sudden we couldn’t help ourselves. The sun was setting, the scenery was gorgeous, and we realized we were exactly where we were supposed to be. We chose “Use Somebody” because Kings of Leon are a Nashville band. We hope you like our simple acoustic version. Shot by Wayne Caparas (Amber’s dad) in a single take, with of course my Dad, John Keyser, working the key grip. We had a BLAST filming this. This is exclusive behind the scenes footage of Johnny Keyser singing during his meet and greet with Grammy Award winning producer Bryan Lenox and reps from Yamaha Artists division. The meeting was held in Lenox’s studio (Toby Mac’s facility in Franklin, TN) on March 16, 2012, less than two weeks after Johnny was released from American Idol. Amazingly, this was Johnny’s first time even stepping into a recording studio. During the meeting Lenox asked respected session pianist Demarco Johnson to join Johnny in an impromptu song sampling for the folks from Yamaha in attendance (as seen in this condensed composite clip). Song samples include Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come,” Stevie Wonder’s “You And I,” Bill Whithers’ “Use Me,” John Legend’s “Ordinary People,” and a full version of Otis Redding’s “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay.” As you’ll see in the clip, Johnny and Demarco had never met beforehand, nor had Johnny ever rehearsed or performed several of these songs, just as Demarco had never even played most of them. All of which underscores the extraordinary talent these two men have. In addition to Ben and Amy of Yamaha, the other attendees were John Keyser Sr., Amber Caparas (me), Anna Burdette, and Wayne Caparas.
